Can You Use a Calculator in the TMUA?
No. You cannot use a calculator in the TMUA. It is not permitted in either paper, so every calculation you do is by hand. A dictionary is not allowed either.
What the no-calculator rule really means
The point is not to make arithmetic a trial. TMUA questions are written so that a calculator would not save you much, because they reward recognising a quick route and using a clean method rather than grinding through heavy computation. If you find yourself wanting a calculator during practice, that is often a sign you have missed a simpler way to approach the question. This is especially true on Paper 2, where the work is reasoning about arguments rather than crunching numbers.
Even so, working without one changes how the test feels. Slow or shaky arithmetic quietly costs you marks and, worse, wastes the thinking time the TMUA otherwise gives you generously.
How to prepare for it
The fix is straightforward, and it starts on day one of your revision.
- Do all your practice calculator-free, so working by hand is your default rather than a shock on the day.
- Keep your mental arithmetic sharp: times tables, fractions, powers, surds, quick estimation and rounding.
- Learn to estimate, so you can rule out multiple-choice options that are obviously the wrong size without a full calculation.
- Practise showing clean working, because a tidy method is faster and less error-prone than scribbling.
Many students lose more to careless arithmetic than to not knowing the content, and that is entirely preventable. Building the habit early means it is invisible by the time you sit the real test.

Frequently asked questions
Can you use a calculator in the TMUA?
No. A calculator is not permitted in either TMUA paper. You work every calculation by hand, so your mental and written arithmetic need to be quick and accurate.
What else is banned in the TMUA?
A dictionary is also not allowed. The test is sat on a computer at a Pearson VUE centre, and you may not bring your own aids into the exam.
Why is there no calculator in the TMUA?
The questions are written to be answered without one, testing clean method and reasoning rather than heavy computation. A calculator would not help on most of them anyway.
