TMUA Paper 1 vs Paper 2: what each paper tests
The TMUA is two papers, and they are not testing the same thing. Both are multiple choice, both have 20 questions, and both last 75 minutes, so the whole test runs to 2 hours 30 minutes. You sit them on a computer at a Pearson VUE centre with no calculator. Where they part company is in what they ask you to do with the maths.

TMUA Paper 1: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge
Paper 1 gives you maths you already know and asks you to use it on problems you have not seen before. The official specification bases the whole test on Higher Level GCSE and AS-level mathematics, so the content here is familiar: algebra, sequences and series, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms. What makes it bite is that questions rarely tell you which method to reach for. You have to read the structure of the problem and pick the tool yourself, quickly.
Here is the flavour of it:
A geometric sequence has first term 5 and third term 45. What is the sum of its first four terms?
Nothing here is advanced. The common ratio satisfies 5 times r squared equals 45, so r squared is 9 and r is 3. The terms are 5, 15, 45, 135, which add to 200. The catch is subtle: unless the question tells you the terms are positive, r could also be minus 3, which gives a different sum. Paper 1 lives in exactly that gap between knowing the technique and applying it without slipping.
The way to get quicker here is fluency. When the core algebra is automatic, you spend your thinking on the part that actually earns the mark, which is working out how to start.
TMUA Paper 2: Mathematical Reasoning
Paper 2 is about arguments rather than calculations. It asks whether a statement follows from another, whether a proof is sound, whether a condition is necessary or sufficient, and whether a claim survives a counterexample.
This is the paper that catches people out, because school maths rarely trains it directly. Take a claim like this:
For every integer n, if n is divisible by 6 then n is divisible by 4.
It sounds reasonable, and it is false. The integer 6 is divisible by 6 but not by 4, and one counterexample is enough to sink the whole claim. Paper 2 is full of that move: testing whether a neat-sounding statement actually holds, spotting the case that breaks it, or seeing that "if and only if" demands more than a one-way implication. The maths underneath is still AS-level. The skill on top is careful reasoning.
Which TMUA paper is harder?
Neither is objectively harder, but Paper 2 feels stranger the first time, and that unfamiliarity costs marks if you meet it cold on test day. Students with strong exam technique often lose more on Paper 2 than on Paper 1, simply because they have practised applying maths for years and reasoning about it for weeks. The fix is to give Paper 2 its own preparation rather than assuming your maths will carry it.

Because the content overlaps, the same revision feeds both papers. What differs is what each does with it, so practise both styles rather than leaning on your stronger one.
