TMUA Exam Day: Everything You Need to Know

Exam day runs more smoothly when nothing about it is a surprise. The TMUA is sat on a computer at a Pearson VUE test centre, and while the questions are the hard part, the logistics are where avoidable mistakes happen.

Before you go

You book your own test slot at a Pearson VUE centre when booking opens, so sort this early. Popular centres and dates fill up, and leaving it late can mean travelling further than you would like. Once booked, read your confirmation carefully, especially the identification rules. Pearson VUE requires valid ID to admit you, and turning up with the wrong document is one of the few things that can end your test before it starts. What to bring

• Valid identification that matches Pearson VUE's stated requirements.
• Your booking confirmation and any reference number it gives you.

Leave the calculator and dictionary at home, because neither is permitted. If you have approved access arrangements, such as extra time, make sure they are in place well before the day, since these are arranged in advance and cannot be sorted out at the centre.

During the test

You sit two papers, each a 75-minute block of 20 multiple-choice questions, delivered in an on-screen player. You can move between questions and flag ones to return to, which is worth using deliberately rather than grinding through in order. Because the interface is part of the experience, sit the official specimen tests beforehand so the layout, timer and flagging are familiar.

The exact arrangements between the two papers, such as any break, are set out in the official guidance and your confirmation, so check those rather than assuming. Whatever the structure, do not let a rough Paper 1 bleed into Paper 2. They are scaled together, so every question in the second paper still counts fully, and a fresh start there protects your score.

Tactics for the questions

The plan that serves most candidates is simple and worth rehearsing in practice so it is automatic on the day:

1. Read each question fully before choosing a method, since Paper 1 rarely tells you which technique to use.
2. Answer the questions you find manageable first, and bank those marks.
3. Flag anything that would eat your time, and move on without hesitating.
4. Come back to flagged questions with whatever time remains.
5. In the final minutes, make sure nothing is left blank, since there is no negative marking and a guess can only help.

After the test

Results for the October 2026 sitting are released on 16 November 2026, and for the January 2027 sitting on 8 February 2027, and your score is shared with the universities you have applied to. There is nothing more to submit once you leave the centre.
