TMUA Preparation: How Long Should You Study?

2 min readAugust 2026tmuapreparationstudy-plan

There is no official answer to how long TMUA preparation should take, and anyone who gives you a precise number is guessing. What you can do is reason it out from where you are starting and how the test rewards preparation.

A workable starting point

For many students, two to three months of regular work is a sensible amount. That is usually long enough to audit your content against the specification, rebuild weak topics, learn the Paper 2 reasoning as a separate strand, and sit a decent number of timed papers with real review in between. It is a starting point, not a rule: someone whose maths is already strong may need less, and someone who has never done logic and proof may want more.

Why consistency beats total hours

The TMUA rewards choosing the right method quickly and reasoning carefully, and those are skills you build by repetition rather than by cramming. A student doing three focused, timed sessions a week for two months will almost always be better prepared than one who does nothing until the fortnight before and then works flat out. Short and regular wins, because speed and reasoning only develop with spacing.

Adjust the length to your starting point

Two things move the sensible length up or down:

  • How solid your maths is. If your AS-level content is current and strong, more of your time can go on timed practice and technique, and you need less overall. If there are real gaps, build in weeks to close them first.
  • How new Paper 2 is to you. Most school courses barely touch logic and proof, so if you have never met it, give yourself extra time to learn it properly rather than bolting it on at the end. See Paper 1 vs Paper 2.

Work backwards from the date

The most reliable way to decide is to start from your test date and plan in reverse. For 2027 entry the October sitting runs 12 to 16 October 2026 and the January sitting 4 to 8 January 2027, and Cambridge and Oxford applicants must sit in October. Fix your date, then place your full mocks in the final fortnight, your mixed timed practice in the weeks before that, and your content rebuilding and Paper 2 foundations at the start. Frequently asked questions

How long should I prepare for the TMUA?

For many students, two to three months of regular preparation is a workable starting point. The right length depends on how solid your AS-level maths already is and how much time you can give each week, so treat it as a guide rather than a rule.

Can I prepare for the TMUA in a month?

It is possible if your maths is already strong and you focus on timed practice and technique, but it leaves little room to learn the Paper 2 reasoning that school does not cover. Starting earlier gives you more margin.

How many hours a week should I study for the TMUA?

There is no fixed figure. A few focused, timed sessions each week, done consistently, tend to work better than occasional long stretches, because the skills you are building are speed, method choice and reasoning.
